The Public Works Department (PWD) is gearing up for a transformative project that could alleviate traffic congestion in northwest Delhi. Officials have revealed plans to develop an elevated six-lane corridor spanning from Bawana to the Auchandi border with Haryana.
This ambitious initiative aims to streamline traffic, especially for residents of Bawana, Kanjahwala, and Narela, providing easier access to the Western Peripheral Expressway.
Currently in the initial planning stage, the proposed corridor has undergone a comprehensive feasibility study by the PWD.
Following this, the department will proceed to prepare a detailed project report, seek expenditure sanction approval, and subsequently enter the tendering phase.
A senior PWD official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, shared insights into the project. "The proposed 3.5km-long, six-lane corridor has a space availability of 22 metres, with 11 metres allocated for each carriageway. The estimated cost of the project is around Rs 400 crores, and once approved, it is expected to be completed in approximately 18 months," the official revealed.
The corridor aims to address the commuting needs of residents in the region, particularly those travelling to Haryana. It will play a crucial role in reducing the vehicular load on arterial roads in Rohini and Pitampura, ultimately benefiting local residents and facilitating a smoother connection to the Western Peripheral Expressway.
The existing Auchandi-Bawana Road, spanning 6km, passes through congested areas such as Bawana Industrial Area, Nangal, Haravali, Kanjhawala road, and Narela. The new 3.5km-long flyover seeks to segregate local and through traffic, thereby minimising congestion for residents.
Jai Bhagwan, local MLA from AAP, expressed optimism about the project's positive impact on the region. "The flyover, starting from DSIIDC Bawana, passing through Bawana Chowk, extending towards Auchandi, and connecting to local points like the Hanuman temple on Bawana road, will significantly benefit the entire area," he stated.
PWD has already conducted an electronic survey of traffic volume along the proposed corridor, identifying encroachments and assessing available space.
A comprehensive traffic study forms the basis for the detailed project report, emphasising the department's commitment to addressing the longstanding traffic concerns in northwest Delhi.
