Prez Murmu Calls For Collaboration At Local, Global Levels For Sustainable Urban Development

While speaking at India Smart Cities Conclave 2023 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday called for collaboration at local and global levels for overall and sustainable urban development.

Murmu emphasised the need to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11, which aims to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. 

She said that this goal underlines the importance of holistic and inclusive development of cities.

She said, "We have to learn from the best practices and business models of the world's best-managed cities and also share our successful efforts with other countries."

The President also stressed the need to develop safe, clean, and healthy neighbourhoods across the country. She said that people must become responsible and understand their duty towards their city and residents. 

She highlighted that proactive participation of people and cooperation of concerned departments is essential to prevent diseases like dengue and malaria in cities. The President also stressed the need for health services, educational institutions, and basic facilities in rural areas. 

She said that this would reduce the pressure on the cities' infrastructure and improve the living conditions of the rural people.

President Murmu also asserted that over 50 per cent of India's population will be living in urban areas by 2047 and that cities will contribute more than 80 per cent to GDP by that time. 

She stressed the need to make a roadmap for the future of cities, keeping in mind the growing aspirations and needs of urban residents.
