After nearly two decades of deliberation, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi VK Saxena has granted approval for the development of more than 140 acres of land in northwest Delhi’s Rani Khera as an industrial area.
The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) handed over this land for the purpose, and the decision comes three months after the approval for the Baprola Industrial area and seven months after the Kanjhawala Industrial area.
The land in question, totaling 147 acres, was transferred from the DDA to the Delhi State Industrial & Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC) in 2007. Initially earmarked for a multilevel manufacturing hub, the project faced a setback when the National Green Tribunal imposed a stay on 14 December, 2017. However, the Supreme Court lifted the NGT order on July 31 of the previous year, clearing the legal hurdles.
L-G House officials released a statement on Monday, confirming that Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has given his approval to notify the Rani Khera Industrial area for development. The Delhi government’s industries department presented the file on 3 January, seeking approval under the relevant provisions of the Delhi Industrial Development Operation and Maintenance Act 2010, in line with the Master Plan of Delhi 2021.
The statement noted, “While submitting the proposal, the L-G was informed that the Centre’s law officer has opined that in view of the entire conspectus of the case, the judgement by the Supreme Court is amply clear in holding that the land in question is released from being used for the purpose of solid waste management and is not prevented from being used for the purposes for which it was acquired.”
