First phase of Mumbai CCTV camera network to be launched next week

MUMBAI, November 26: The first phase of the pan-Mumbai CCTV camera surveillance network will be launched by the state government on November 30, seven years after Mumbai was struck by deadly terror attacks that claimed 166 lives. "Proud to announce that our government will launch 'Go Live' phase-I of Mumbai CCTV network on November 30. It has been pending since last 7 years and we completed it in less than one year. The pan-Mumbai surveillance will be launched by same time in 2016," Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said. The project was conceived by the erstwhile Congress-led UPA government in the state, but got delayed. The first phase will cover South Mumbai. "It is a landmark achievement on the long-pending issue of Mumbai security," the Chief Minister said. The pan-Mumbai project envisages installation of 6,000 CCTV cameras in Greater Mumbai at the cost of Rs 949 crore. Larsen & Toubro (L&T) is implementing the project. For the project, the city has been divided into two zones wherein around 1,400 CCTV cameras will be set up in the south zone (comprising areas in Central and South Mumbai) in the first phase.
