NEW DELHI, July 16: The Delhi government today approved the proposal of constituting the Delhi Urban Development Agency (DUDA) in each district to work as central agency for execution of developmental projects as well as maintenance of public assets.
According to senior government official, DUDA will execute the works recommended by the citizens under 'Swaraj Fund' and those proposed by MLAs through MLA-LAD Fund.
The purpose of constituting DUDA is also to end the confusion of multiplicity of several government agencies working in an area. At present there is confusion about who is the appropriate agency for maintenance, construction and implementation of various public works projects in Delhi.
"It will work as a central agency for executing all the development work. It will bring more transparency and accountability," senior official said.
DUDA will be formed in each district and would be headed by the District Magistrate, who will be assisted by a team of engineers.
The proposal for DUDA was tabled in Delhi Assembly during the budget session last month.
The official claimed DUDA will be highly beneficial in providing civic services and other maintenance work for the improvement of unauthorised colonies and rural area.
"There are a number of agencies for public works like improvement of roads, renovation of drains, renovation of parks or street lights, but in reality none of the agencies take ownership of these public works," Deputy Chief Minsiter, Manish Sisoida said earlier while proposing DUDA.
He also highlighted that the same work in unauthorised colonies has also been assigned to municipal corporations, PWD and DSIIDC. The move to create DUDA was for better administrative control and supervision.
Government claims it would facilitate in improving the accountability, efficiency and transparency in delivery of public services.
