'Car-Free Day' to be observed across Delhi on Sep 22 next yr

NEW DELHI, October 22: Delhi Transport Minister Gopal Rai today said the city government will organise 'Car-Free Day' across the national capital on September 22 next year, a day observed as the World Car-Free Day. To encourage the city residents to use public transport and reduce pollution and traffic congestion, the Delhi government will observe 'Car-Free Day' on separate road stretches on the 22nd of every month. The Car-Free Day was today organised on road stretch between the historic Red Fort and India Gate from 7 AM to 12 noon which saw the participation of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, his deputy Manish Sisodia, cabinet ministers, MLAs and other government officers. Asked whether he would term today's Car-Free Day on Red Fort and India Gate as a success, Rai said, "It is a good beginning. The government will observe 'Car-Free Day' on September 22 next year across the national capital." "By organising Car-Free Day every month, people will gradually get aware about increasing pollution and traffic congestion. This is a good beginning of first Car-Free Day in Delhi. Next month, we will observe such event in Dwarka on November 22," he said. The minister also appealed to people to use public transport once a month to reach their work place. "By doing this, we can make Delhi's 'polluted air' clean." The Delhi government will organise the next Car-Free Day in Dwarka area on November 22, which will go on for the entire day.
