Smart Traffic Technologies

Technology is a powerful force. In the present day and age of intellectual progress technology is considered as one of the key factors that determines the power and development levels of a society. The more technological advanced a society, the higher are its chances of being a fully developed community.  A dominating and attention-grabbing factor of present-day technology is the advent and development of Artificial Intelligence that has slowly made its way into nearly all the major working sectors.

AI technology in transportation and transport traffic signal technology is a new objective being looked into in the advent of smart cities where everything works on digital automation. Traffic signal technology uses probability algorithms and accurate camera sensors to understand traffic patterns on a particular road. They also help in setting up a network where signals communicate with each other to reduce idle traffic conditions that may cause jams. Work is also in progress to make traffic signals more personalized.

  • Smart traffic signals can communicate with smart cars or even send notifications to the commuters as to what would be the best route to take and where heavy traffic may occur.
  • Assistance in locations like finding the nearest gas station or car service stations can be sought out by communicating with signals.
  • Geo-tagging for digital advertisements. In this scenario, a business owner could inform customers about his or her enterprise when the customers are near traffic signals close to their place.
  • To take things even further with automated self-driving cars slowly coming into existence a smart traffic signal could easily lay down the vehicle routes, making changes when necessary hence allowing smooth transportation.

With all these features being implemented and developed, smart traffic signals become an important feature for growing smart cities. Coordination between signals through the IoT and sharing of traffic data can allow for sophisticated models and real-time modification to the traffic control system.
