New Delhi, Sep 22: The National Mobility Card, that allows people to access all modes of transportation across the country by using a singe card, may soon become a reality.
"The project on National Mobility Card is very much part of the government plan to ensure smart mobility across the country. On the first phase, it will be launched for all the metro and later on it will be extended to other modes of transportation," said a senior official in the Ministry of Urban Development.
"The process of consultation is on. However there are certain technical challenges in the project that we are trying to sort out. Once it works out it will be able to create a seamless mobility across the country. We will be able to prepare a final blueprint by early next year."
On Wednesday Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu had said that consultations were on with regard and talks were on between banks and the Railways.
At present cities are planning to launch their own common mobility card. Delhi is likely to launch a common mobility card in October. This pre-paid smart ticket will enable commuters to pay for their Metro and bus rides before they board the vehicle.
If the experiment is successful, the government will attach more services such as parking and taxi payments to it.
The officials are also watching how the city based model works before implementing it across the country.
