GMR Hyderabad International Airport Initiates Sunflower Programme For Passengers With Hidden Disabilities

Globally, the sunflower lanyard is used in over 200 airports and transport systems, having started in the UK in 2016. Passengers needing special assistance should also inform their respective airlines in advance

GMR Hyderabad International Airport (GHIAL) has unveiled the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Programme, an initiative designed to enhance the travel experience for passengers with hidden disabilities. This program emphasises GHIAL's commitment to inclusivity by providing discreet assistance through the use of a sunflower lanyard, a globally recognized symbol indicating that the wearer may need additional help. The initiative aims to foster an understanding and supportive environment for travellers with conditions such as low vision, autism, dementia, intellectual disabilities, or hearing loss.

Passengers can opt for the sunflower lanyard by sharing their travel details via a form on the airport's website or by availing it at the airport's Information desk on the day of travel. The airport has ensured that staff at various passenger interaction points, including information desks, check-in counters, security, immigration, customs checkpoints, retail outlets, and boarding gates, are trained and aware of the program.

Pradeep Panicker, CEO of GHIAL, stated, "The introduction of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower initiative at Hyderabad Airport reflects our commitment to ensuring a seamless and comfortable travel experience for all passengers. We recognize the challenges faced by individuals with hidden disabilities during travel, and our aim is to foster an ecosystem that is understanding, supportive, diverse, and inclusive. This will pave the way for enhanced communication between passengers, airport staff, and aid in an overall improved travel experience.”

Globally, the sunflower lanyard is used in over 200 airports and transport systems, having started in the UK in 2016. Passengers needing special assistance should also inform their respective airlines in advance.
