Amidst the tussle between the Centre and the West Bengal government continue, the state government recently appointed the senior-most state IPS officer, Manoj Malaviya, as an interim Director General of Police as an additional charge.
The order was issued soon after the present state DGP, Virendra retired on Tuesday while the Centre is yet to clear the name of the next DGP. The Union Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) under the PMO clears the name for the post.
Malaviya, who is presently posted as DG (Organisation), is the first name in the list of candidates sent by the state to the DoPT for final clearance. Malaviya was on central deputation at the CBI and the CAPF (Central Armed Police Force) and bears all the qualifications to become the state DGP. However, with several corruption allegations, during his tenure as the chief of the Bureau of Civil Aviation, his candidature for the position may find difficult to get through in the final UPSC scrutiny.
