National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), Ministry of Jal Shakti and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today for management of water and wastewater.
The MoU was signed by Mr D. P. Mathuria, Executive Director – Technical, National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), Ministry of Jal Shakti and Mr Sanjay Seth, Senior Director, Sustainable Habitat Programme, TERI in the presence of Shri Rajiv Ranjan Mishra, Director General, NMCG and other senior officials from NMCG and TERI.
The 3-year collaboration envisages implementation of TERI Advanced Oxidation Technology (TADOX) in the existing and upcoming Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs) and Common Sewage Treatment Plants (CSTPs) in order to achieve Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) and enhance water reuse efficiency. This MoU also aims at associating with pilot technologies for wastewater treatment under Pavitra Ganga project, jointly funded by European Union (EU) and Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt. of India under HORIZON-2020. Other strengths of TERI in training, capacity building and policy would also be utilised.
Mr D.P. Mathuria, Executive Director (Technical), NMCG expressed immense satisfaction and said that interventions like Advanced Oxidation could help in capacity enhancement and augmentation plans of existing CETPs and present huge potential in solving both point source and non-point source pollution abatement.
Dr Ajay Mathur, DG, TERI said that the approach “One size fits all” is not relevant for treating different kinds of waste water streams and, on the other hand, “New design for each application” is too difficult and manpower intensive. He also emphasised the need for innovative and appropriate technologies for wastewater treatment to enhance water reuse efficiency.
Both NMCG and TERI agreed to encourage indigenous technologies for pilot demonstrations initially which could be ramped up for full-scale implementation under augmentation plans or newer infrastructure projects.
Highlighting the benefits of TADOX, Dr Nupur Bahadur, inventor of technology, and Fellow, TERI said, "TADOX involves novel approaches with minimum use of chemicals, leading to reduction in sludge quantum and secondary pollution. The integration of TADOX will substantially reduce load on downstream tertiary treatment leading to affordable ZLD compliance, as per CPCB Guidelines.”
TADOX Technology is developed under DST-Water Mission, Water Technology Initiative (WTI) Program of Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India.
