In a concerted effort to modernise public transportation infrastructure in Srinagar, the Srinagar Smart City initiative has announced plans to introduce an additional fleet of 100 electric buses (e-buses) by the end of the upcoming year. This move comes in response to the city's growing demand for sustainable and efficient commuting options, with officials aiming to significantly enhance public transit services.
Currently, Srinagar already boasts a fleet of 75 e-buses, with an additional 25 set to be added imminently, as confirmed by officials on Friday. Speaking to reporters during an event in Srinagar, CEO of Smart City, Owais Ahmed, underscored the initiative's commitment to meeting the evolving transportation needs of city residents through the procurement of more e-buses.
Ahmed highlighted the positive reception from the populace towards e-buses, citing a noticeable increase in demand for these environmentally-friendly vehicles. Recognising the city's requirement for approximately 550 buses to adequately serve its transportation needs, authorities are optimistic about bridging this gap in the near future.
Emphasising the importance of sustainable urban mobility, another official from Srinagar Smart City reiterated the commitment to augmenting public transport services, noting the keen interest of the Prime Minister in the city's development agenda. The long-term vision is set on achieving commendable public transportation standards by the year 2030.
By the conclusion of the upcoming year, the introduction of 100 additional e-buses is expected to provide significant relief to city residents, with plans for further expansion in subsequent years. The transition to electric buses is part of a broader initiative to electrify the entire city's transportation system, aimed at reducing environmental pollution and promoting eco-friendly commuting options.
E-buses, equipped with modern amenities and real-time route updates via dedicated applications, offer a transformative alternative to traditional buses, enhancing convenience and efficiency for commuters. With the continued expansion of the e-bus fleet, authorities anticipate a smoother and more sustainable transportation experience for residents and visitors alike in Srinagar.
