Pune Metro Stations Set For Name Change Amidst Public Demands

In response to mounting demands from commuters, political parties, and civic activists, the Pune Metro administration has initiated steps to change the names of several metro stations within the city. 

The decision comes following widespread calls for renaming stations to better reflect their geographical locations and landmarks, enhancing commuter convenience and clarity.

The clamour for name changes gained momentum after the inauguration of the first phase of the Pune Metro in March 2022. Notably, the demand for renaming the Bhosari station to Nashik Phata sparked the debate, with commuters highlighting the disparity between station names and their actual locations.

Atul Gadgil, Director (Works) of Pune Metro, affirmed that the administration had forwarded proposals for name changes to the state and central governments, in response to public outcry. With the state government recently delegating authority to Pune Metro for station renaming, plans are underway to form a committee comprising key stakeholders to finalise the new names.

Among the stations slated for renaming are Mangalwar Peth, Budhwar Peth, Ideal Colony, Civil Court, Shivajinagar, and Bhosari. However, the final decision rests with the committee, which will include representatives from the Pune Municipal Corporation, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, and other relevant bodies.

The state government's Urban Development Department issued an order on 23 February, outlining the process for changing metro station names. Deputy Secretary Vijay Chaudhari highlighted the need for internal committees within metro project authorities to solicit feedback from citizens, residents' groups, and local leaders. The new names must accurately reflect geographical landmarks while being easily recognisable to the public.

The demands for name changes have sparked debates and suggestions from various quarters. Shiv Sena workers have proposed renaming the Mangalwar Peth station to Kasba Peth, emphasising historical significance. Civic activists and legal professionals have similarly advocated for renaming stations to align with nearby landmarks and institutions, addressing potential confusion among commuters.

As discussions unfold and committees deliberate, the renaming of Pune Metro stations reflects a concerted effort to enhance accessibility, clarity, and cultural relevance within the city's public transportation infrastructure.
