In a historic moment for the state, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik laid the foundation stone for the much-anticipated metro rail project on Monday, marking the commencement of a transformative journey for the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.
The metro rail project, expected to become a vital lifeline for the region upon completion, aims to provide seamless transportation from Bhubaneswar airport to Cuttack via Trishulia.
The state government envisions the metro rail as a game-changer in the urban transport landscape, enhancing connectivity and easing the commute for residents.
“The foundation of a new Odisha has been laid on the occasion of the New Year. The metro rail project will be completed in four years, and the people of the state will avail the facility of metro rail. Today will always remain in the history of Odisha’s development,” expressed Chief Minister Patnaik during the foundation stone-laying ceremony.
The ambitious project, estimated to cost over Rs 6000 crore, marks the single largest investment in the history of Odisha's infrastructure. Patnaik highlighted that the entire funding for the metro rail initiative would be borne by the Odisha government, emphasising its significance as a flagship program under the 5T initiative.
“I have asked to prepare a master plan for the extension of the metro rail to Khordha, Puri, and Cuttack,” added Patnaik, indicating a forward-looking vision for the expansion of the metro network in the state.
The Metro Rail project was initially announced by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Odisha Dibas, 1 April 2023. Phase I of the project is set to connect Bhubaneswar Airport with Trisulia Square, traversing key locations such as Chandrasekharpur, Jaydev Vihar, Vani Vihar, Master Canteen, and Rajmahal Square.
On 14 November of the preceding year, the Odisha Cabinet approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Phase I of the metro railway project, estimating a cost of Rs 5929.38 crore.
The engagement of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on a nomination basis as the turn-key consultant for project execution was also confirmed.
The commencement of the metro rail project signifies a major leap forward in the state's infrastructure development, promising enhanced connectivity, and a more efficient public transportation system for the citizens of Odisha.
