Namma Metro Introduces Women-Driven E-Autos At Two Stations

In a bid to revolutionise last-mile connectivity for commuters accessing Bengaluru's Namma Metro stations, a fleet of electric auto-rickshaws operated exclusively by women drivers at Indiranagar and Yelachenahalli metro stations has been introduced. 

Led by Alstom in collaboration with WRI India, Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL), and the Metroride app, the Low Emission Access to Public Transport (LEAP) initiative marks a major step towards addressing the critical issue of bridging the gap between metro stations and commuters' final destinations.

During its pilot phase, the LEAP initiative will see electric auto-rickshaws servicing commuters within a 4-kilometre radius of each station, offering a sustainable and convenient last-mile service. 

Olivier Loison, Managing Director of Alstom India, underscored the strategic choice of Indira Nagar and Yelachenahalli stations, noting their prominence as commercial and IT hubs respectively. This project is expected to have a substantial impact on alleviating traffic congestion and enhancing mobility options for commuters.

A distinctive feature of the LEAP project is its commitment to gender inclusivity, with women drivers specifically recruited to operate the e-autos. This not only fosters women's employment but also enhances commuter safety and comfort, particularly during late-night travel, fostering a more inclusive environment for all passengers.

Looking ahead, the LEAP project stands as a pioneering model for sustainable urban transportation, with insights garnered from this project expected to guide future endeavours aimed at addressing last-mile connectivity challenges in Bengaluru and beyond. 

Through a collaborative approach involving public and private stakeholders, Namma Metro endeavours to enhance the overall commuting experience while contributing to a greener, more inclusive urban landscape.
