Chennai Metro Rail Initiates Production Of First Driverless Train For Phase II Project

Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) is set to commence the production of the first driverless train for the ongoing phase II project at Sri City on Thursday, 8 February. This milestone marks a significant step forward in the expansion of Chennai's metro network and heralds the introduction of cutting-edge technology to enhance public transportation.

CMRL officials have confirmed that a delegation from the city will be present at the production facility to witness the commencement of manufacturing. The driverless train is expected to be delivered to Chennai by August, signalling the gradual transition towards automated train operations in the metro network.

Unlike the manual train operations of phase I, the phase II project spanning 116 kilometres will feature three-coach driverless trains. 

These advanced trains are slated to make their inaugural run in December 2025, coinciding with the opening of the Poonamallee-Porur stretch, a pivotal corridor of phase II.

Retaining the iconic blue colour scheme synonymous with CMRL trains, the phase II trains will incorporate a range of innovative features to enhance passenger experience. From mobile charging points to digital dynamic route maps, commuters can expect modern amenities aboard the new trains.

"In addition to the familiar blue aesthetic, the three-coach trains will include designated women-only compartments with distinctive pink handrails. Enhanced security measures, such as strategically placed cameras and advanced detection systems for fire, derailment, and obstacles, will further bolster passenger safety," stated a CMRL official.

The rigorous testing phase will commence upon the arrival of the train, spanning approximately eight to ten months. From brake systems to traction capabilities, the trains will undergo comprehensive assessments to ensure optimal performance and safety standards.

"Dedicated testing facilities have been allocated for static and dynamic trials, with restricted access to staff to facilitate thorough evaluations. The approval for passenger operations will be contingent upon the successful completion of a series of tests and trials, underscoring CMRL's commitment to ensuring the reliability and safety of Chennai's metro network," added another official.

The initiation of production for the first driverless train marks a significant milestone in Chennai's metro expansion journey, heralding a new era of efficient, technologically advanced public transportation for residents and commuters alike.
