In a significant development, it has been revealed that the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail project is slated to be completed by December 2027. This announcement came during the State-level Project Monitoring Committee meeting held today at Lok Seva Bhavan, focusing on the project's first phase.
Chaired by Chief Secretary Pradeep Kumar Jena, the meeting delved into various aspects of the project, including platform preparations, financial arrangements, and technical specifications. An official statement highlighted that critical tasks such as tendering for civil works, utility relocations, land planning, and structural arrangements are expected to be finalised within the next six to eight months.
The foundation stone for the project was laid by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in January 2024, setting the stage for the ambitious endeavour. While the anticipated completion date is December 2027, the project is being executed under a contract between the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Corporation and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), with the latter serving as a turn-key consultant for constructing the metro rail stretch from Biju Patnaik International Airport to Trishulia.
Key officials including Additional Chief Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Department G Mathivathanan, Principal Secretary of Finance Department Vishal Kumar Dev, Special Secretary of Commerce and Transport Department Manoj Kumar Mishra (Railway Corporation), Development Commissioner and Additional Chief Secretary Anu Garg, along with other committee members, were present at the meeting.
The projected completion date underscores the commitment of the authorities towards enhancing urban transportation infrastructure in Bhubaneswar. Once operational, the metro rail system is expected to alleviate traffic congestion, improve connectivity, and promote sustainable urban development in the region.
As the project progresses, stakeholders remain optimistic about its timely execution and the transformative impact it will have on the city's transportation landscape.
