Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway Becomes First To Launch First GPS-Based Toll System In India

In a major leap towards technological innovation in transportation, the country is gearing up for the introduction of a pioneering GPS-based toll system. Engineered to charge vehicles based on the distance travelled, this cutting-edge system is slated to make its debut on the Mysore-Bangalore Expressway, promising a seamless toll-collection process for commuters.

Plans are also underway to extend this technology to the bustling Delhi-Jaipur National Highway 48.

Preparations for the implementation of the GPS-based toll collection system on these expressways have been finalised, with the Delhi-Jaipur highway, covering a substantial distance, currently under the scrutiny of the Union Ministry of Highways.

The ministry has initiated geofencing efforts to precisely calculate toll charges, taking into account the distance covered by vehicles.

Initially, the GPS-based toll collection system will be exclusive to the over 18 lakh commercial vehicles already equipped with GPS-based vehicle location tracking systems.

The system's primary objective is to elevate the efficiency and accuracy of toll payments. A phased rollout strategy is in place, involving trial runs of the GPS toll system on various roads across the nation before its full-scale nationwide implementation.

Union Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari had previously confirmed in the Lok Sabha that the commencement of GPS-based toll collection is scheduled for March of this year. Union Road Transport Secretary Anurag Jain further reiterated the government's commitment to addressing any challenges associated with the GPS-based toll system, expressing readiness to deploy it promptly.

The introduction of this GPS-based toll system is expected to revolutionise toll collection, providing a more accurate and streamlined experience for both commuters and authorities.

As the country moves towards embracing advanced technologies in its transportation infrastructure, the implementation of GPS-based toll collection stands as a significant milestone in improving the overall efficiency of road networks.
